Raft of European pre-sales for high-end history drama doc

London, June 14th 2016

UK history producer Urban Canyons has closed co-production deals with the US’ Smithsonian Networks and German public broadcaster ZDF for Warrior Women, a big-budget history drama documentary about elite female soldiers.

Warrior Women (3 x 52 mins), which starts filming this month in Malta, Kazakhstan, West Africa, the US, Italy, France, Turkey, Austria and the UK, will be delivered in HD and UHD/4K in June 2017.

Executive producer Sebastian Peiter, managing director of Urban Canyons, has brokered pre-sales deals for the high-end series with broadcasters from around Europe, including Scandinavian pay-TV giant MTG, and public broadcasters SVT Sweden, SRF Switzerland, ORF Austria and RTV Slovenia. AMC Iberia and Acht Belgium have also pre-bought the series.

Supported by the Malta Film Commission, Warrior Women has received funding from London’s Compact Media Investment Fund and the European MEDIA Creative Europe fund.

Peiter said: "This deal involving such a range of European broadcasters and vital support from the European MEDIA Creative Europe proves how important inter-European co-operation has become in a market that is increasingly relying on co-production to produce high-end history programming."

David Royle, Smithsonian Networks Executive Vice President for programming and production, said: "we are delighted to be a lead co-producer for this new series. Urban canyon has been a great creative partner, producing a beautifully filmed trilogy for us on Japanese warrior culture. And has also proved its skill at finding European partners that share our channel values."

Kristina Hollstein, director of acquisitions and co-productions, documentaries, at ZDF Enterprises, said: "We value Urban Canyons’ history output because of its high-end re-enactments, as well as its suitability for various slots on the ZDF main channel and our specialist channel."

About Warrior Women:

A three-part drama documentary series, Warrior Women tells the stories of history’s most skilled, ferocious and iconic female soldiers from the 5th century BC to the present day. The series chronicles the military achievements of the original Amazons of the Eurasian Steppe, examines the fearsome Gladiatrices, who were recruited from ‘barbarian’ tribes to entertain the Roman public, and revisits the all-women Mino ‘virgin’ regiments, who shaped African history and almost annihilated the French colonial forces.

Supported by dramatic re-enactment, CG animation and interviews with historians, archaeologists and museum curators, each gripping tale of blood, sacrifice and endurance centers on the life of a young woman caught up in the bloody struggles of her time. Additional examples of female warriors from a range of cultures and centuries shed light on the lessons learned from the historically accurate stories of Tamura, Ardala and Nanisca.
