Manchester based URBAN CANYONS LTD is the UK fastest growing provider of arts and youth culture content, showing at MIPTV in its second year at the UK INDIES stand LR4.15.

Since its launch in 2006, Urban Canyons has detected strong demand for its URBANATION broadcast archive of over 550x2min shorts. Completed sales include DVD publisher Time Out, VoD channels Babelgum, Yahoo! and Toyota. Al Gore’s Current TV was originally launched in the US with 150x URBANATION shorts.

Urban Canyons MD Sebastian Peiter: „There is a new generation of TV viewers that is used to clip size content of internet providers like YouTube, which creates a strong demand for bite-sized broadcast programming. Urban Canyons sales record demonstrates that it is even possible to receive advance payments for broadcast product from VOD and Internet operators. But you need to get in early. Once a channel is up and running, operators are more likely to insist on royalty payments."

For MIPTV, Urban Canyons secured a commission from newly launched VOD operator BABELGUM to produce the URBANATION ICONS 13x23’ series targeting music fans who would normally browse the internet for in-depth information on their favourite musicians. URBANATION ICONS features genre creating music innovators Moby, Beck, Gorillaz, Air, Grandmaster Flash, Richard Ashcroft, Ken Ishii, The Roots (+Rhazel), Agnostic Front, Cradle of Filth, Dillinja & Lemon D, Gonzales and Beenie Man.

Sebastian Peiter: "Our collaboration with BABELGUM exceeded all expectations. Here was a VOD channel that was actually commissioning us to create a new series for an internet savvy niche audience of music fans, which is now distributed to other specialist satellite and cable TV channels."

Urban Canyon’s second year MIP catalogue includes one off documentaries on GUERILLA ART 1x50’, HD concert programme STEVE REICH AT THE ROXY 1x68’ and THE SECRET OF CHINESE LOVE SOUP 1x43’.
